I grew up in a black conservative Christian household in suburban New Jersey. The kind of home where my parents would only pay for college if I wanted to be an engineer or a doctor. My parents were hardcore Christians: no trick or treating, Harry Potter movies, or even Yu-Gi-Oh! cards allowed (in retrospect Pokémon was the way to go anyway, but still).

Oh and we believed the Earth was about seven thousand years old.
